This topic is about:

This topic will examine the process of learning and using a second language. Research in second language acquisition (SLA) is multi-disciplinary in nature, reflecting the complex nature of adult language learning and use. Linguistic, psychological, and social processes that underlie language(s) learning and use will be introduced and research findings will be examined from the perspective of both the language teaching profession and the SLA researcher.

This topic aims to:

1) Provide students with a foundation in second language acquisition research

2) Introduces students to empirical and theoretical issues in the field by considering both learner-internal and learner-external factors that shape the course of L2 development and attainment

3) Develop the ability of students to think critically about research findings in the field

4) Encourage students to think about the implications of SLA research and second language instruction for classroom practice
